Does anyone have any information to share about any blacksmithing ELLIOTTs who could have had a son George either 1725 or 1730ish? All the American branch of the family know about his origin is that their forbear was born 1731 (some have 1725) in Scotland, arriving nr Baltimore about 1745, living in Pennsylvania then Georgia, and working as a blacksmith. Naming pattern of George's children would indicate that we might be looking for a Robert and Margaret as parents. My interest isn't ELLIOTTs per se, but because the FAIRBAIRN DNA project is starting to accumulate a growing number of ELLIOTT matches (who do not match other ELLIOTT lines in the Border Reiver project).
They have an excellent dna match with Lineage 1 of the FAIRBAIRNs (see http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spFAIRBAIRNLineages.htm) so it is a fair bet that he was/they are from the Scottish Borders. Heaven forbid, it may actually be that these FAIRBAIRNs could turn out to be ELLIOTTs, or the ELLIOTTs could be FAIRBAIRNs. Jury very much still out as the earliest paper trails supporting any of this currently run out around 1705 for the FAIRBAIRNs and 1730 for the ELLIOTTs.

Hi Lorna, Don't know if you are far from Christchurch; a bit nippy here this morning feeding the horses!! I'm researching my Elliot ancestors and I know there is an Andrew Elliot, Blacksmith on the Newcastleton, Roxburghshire 1841 census. He was born circa 1772, died 1850, aged 78yrs, wife Jane Wilson both born outside the county.Perhaps some of his earlier family is what you are after. He confused me because I have an Andrew Elliot also b.circa 1772 but a joiner. I also have a blacksmith Thomas Story b.c.1793 who worked in Newcastleton for years and was married twice just to confuse me further. They would all know each other!! It's hopeless trying to look for certain names with the Elliots as they are all called in successive generations the same names and are so numerous. rgds Strath Stewart |

| I have information on Elliot blacksmiths as well. My info starts in 1760 with a John Elliot blacksmith in Canonbie. He had a son George born 1789 Canonbie who was also a Blacksmith in Canonbie for a time before moving to Annan where he was also a Blacksmith. He lived his life out in Annan dying in 1875. There were more Elliot blacksmiths in Annan that followed him. If you need more information about them just let me know. Merv. |
